According to a recent report by the U.S. Department of Labor, the unemployment rate remained at 4.1% for the third consecutive month. The economy also added 148,000 jobs, lower than the expected 190,000 jobs. Job gains occurred in health care, construction, and manufacturing.
Here are some of the highlights for the month of December.
BROAD OVERVIEW
- Unemployment remained at 4.1%
- Wages increased by $0.09 to $26.63
- Workweek hours remained at 34.5 hours
UNEMPLOYMENT BY DEMOGRAPHICS
- Unemployment for adult men was 3.8%
- Unemployment for adult women was 3.7%
- Unemployment was 2.5% for Asians, 6.8% for Blacks, 4.9% for Hispanics, and 3.7% for Whites.
UNEMPLOYMENT BY EDUCATION
- Unemployment for persons without a high school diploma was 6.3%
- Unemployment for persons with a high school diploma was 4.2%
- Unemployment for persons with a bachelor’s degree or higher was 2.1%
EMPLOYMENT BY INDUSTRY
- Health care increased by 0.1%
- Construction increased by 0.4%
- Manufacturing increased by 0.2%
- Leisure and hospitality increased by 0.2%
- Retail trade decreased by 0.1%
