Recruiting Gen Z: 4 Tips for Hiring the Latest Generation

If you’re like most recruiters, you’re always looking for ways to stay ahead of the curve and find the best talent out there. With a new generation entering the workforce every few years, it’s important for recruiters to keep up with what’s important to the latest generation of candidates, and most recently, this means Gen Z.

Born between 1996 and 2010, the youngest of this generation is starting to join the workforce while the oldest are entering leadership positions. As the most tech-savvy and diverse generation of people, Gen Zs bring with them a whole set of unique skills and expectations. Here are 4 tips to help you attract and retain the best talents of Gen Z.

1. Keep it Digital

When recruiting Gen Z candidates, you should keep in mind that this generation is very comfortable with technology. Compared to other generations of talent, such as baby boomers and millennials, Gen Z has grown up in an entirely digital world. As digital natives, Gen Zs are comfortable using a wide variety of programs and tools. Being tech-savvy means they are comfortable on digital and social platforms as they are more ingrained in their daily lives.

To use their digital literacy to your advantage, leverage multiple digital platforms to reach them. Use platforms like TikTok and Instagram to connect with potential candidates and give them a behind-the-scenes look at your company. Additionally, don’t be afraid to include texts or video interviews in your hiring process — these are the preferred methods of communication for this generation.

Also, since Gen Zs are used to getting bite-sized content like tweets and short-form videos, it is time to get creative with your job descriptions. Make sure your job descriptions are clear and concise. Use bullet points and highlight the most important information, such as a position’s required skills and qualifications.

2. Enrich Your Company Culture

Work culture is important to all generations, but most especially to Gen Z. This generation is socially responsible and wants to work for companies whose values align with their own. So, when recruiting Gen Z candidates, be sure to sell them on your company culture and what makes it unique. Ensure that your company mission and brand are consistent throughout your website, social media channels, and repeated during the interview process.

Gen Z wants to know what it’s like to work at your company—and they’re not going to take your word for it. According to a recent study, 72% of Gen Zers say that they will research an employer online before even applying for a job. So make sure you’re sharing employee experiences across all your channels, from LinkedIn to Instagram Stories. You can also create an Employee Advocacy program to get employees talking about your company organically.

3. Offer Flexibility

Gen Z is all about flexibility—they’re looking for employers who are willing to be flexible in terms of hours, location, and even compensation. So, if you want to appeal to Gen Z candidates, be sure to emphasize your company’s flexibility during the recruiting process.

In addition to offering competitive salaries, consider offering additional perks like flexible work hours or the ability to work remotely on occasion. You can stand out by offering flexible compensation practices. These types of benefits will appeal to Gen Z candidates who place a high value on work-life balance.

4. Provide Development Opportunities

Candidates from Gen Z want to know that they’ll be able to learn and grow in their roles. Gen Zers are ambitious so when they envision their future workplace, they want opportunities for development and career advancement within a company.

When you’re recruiting candidates from this generation, strong mentorship or training programs are highly desirable. Mention how their career paths may look within your company, and discuss any potential for career growth within the organization. Additionally, be sure to highlight any development opportunities that your company offers—such as training courses, or education reimbursement.
