Borrell Associates recently released a 2013 report on local online ad revenue, at their Local Online Advertising Conference in New York City. Covering over 6,000 media sites, the report includes online-only publishers, newspapers, broadcast media, and others.
Many interesting factoids were included in this report, but above all was the astonishing figure of $24.3 billion projected online ad revenue in 2013 – a growth of 31% from 2012.
Street Fight Magazine quotes Gordon Borrel, CEO of Borrell Associates, as saying:
”The biggest untold story of local online ventures is the tidy profit that many are amassing,” the report said. ”A small independent that made $350,000 last year generated a $100,000 profit. A TV website made $3 million in digital sales and reported $2 million in profit. Even one of the largest local online advertising entities, Autotrader.com, claimed a sizable profit – $300 million on nearly $1.2 billion in revenue.”

Throughout mentions of positive trends and projections, Gordon was also sure to warn digital publishers to focus on audience engagement alongside their digital advertising initiatives. As advertisements draws buyers over readers, reader engagement is an integral component of successful online strategies.
As long as engagement is kept a priority, increases in online ad revenue are anticipated across the board in 2013 – from newspapers and local sites to TV and radio, all media sites & varieties.
